USS Constitution Pack 4 – Stages 28 – 38

Stage 28 contents:- Wooden strip, ramin strip and ladder sides.

Take the ladder sides and trim the ends so you have six slots for the steps. Next cut six 17mm long steps from the 1 x 4mm ramin strip. Glue the steps into one side of the ladder then join the other half to complete it. Once the glue has cured stain the ladder with you chosen stain and leave to dry.

Remove the beam that is showing in the opening of the hatch closest to the mizzenmast hole and then take the grating you made in stage 27 and glue it over the hatch you just removed the beam from with the smaller end grating section pointing to the rear.

Insert the ladder into the hatch and glue into position.

Stage complete.

Stage 29

Stage 29 contents:- Wooden strips and nails.

Start the fifth row of hull planking by placing a wooden strip between frames 1 to 5, add two more strips from former 5 to 7 then 7 to 9. Next start a new row of strips this time from frames 1 to 4 then add the next strip between frames 4 to 7.

The last strip in this row will go from frame 7 to 11. fix the strip so it curves up from frame 9 and it sits next to the row 4 set of strips. This will leave a triangular gap two frames long which will be filled later in the build.

Add another row off strips below the one just laid from frames 1 to 5 , 5 to 8, 8 to 11. The excess strips that overhang frames 1 and 11 can be removed when the glue is dry with a small saw.

Repeat the steps above on the other side of the hull.

Stage complete.

Stage 31 contents:- Grating strips, ramin strip, carronade parts and blocks.

From the grating already made up cut a 4 x 7 section and smooth the sides, surround the grating with walnut strip like before and then add a ramin strip to each of the long sides of the grating. Next cut fourteen 2 x 2 ramin strips 15mm long.

Start adding the ramin strips along the side of the grating until non are left then sand the edges to fit the width of the grating. Cut three more ramin strips to surround the assembly then sand to shape.

Stain the finished grating with your chosen stain and leave to dry then use a clear coat to finish the grating. Glue the finished grating over the forward hatch 50mm from the large central hole and with the ramin section to the rear.

Stage 32

Stage 32 contents:- Wooden strips and nails.

Note: If a strip is slightly too short to go between the frames as numbered just add another section of strip between two frames and then continue adding strips.

The line of the frames will now begin to curve more, resulting in wider gaps between the strips. This is not a problem, as they will be filled at a later stage, so do not force any strips to fit. Fix a strip from frame 5 to frame 8, then fix another strip from frame 8 to 11.

Let the strip run straight this will leave a triangular gap between the strips at frames 10 and 11.

Next start a new row by adding a strip from frame 3 to frame 7 again this will leave a triangular gap, continue by adding a strip from frame 7 to 11.The next strip will start at frame 2 going to frame 5, add another from 5 to 8 then 8 to 11. Add another strip from frame 1 to 5, 5 to 8, 8 to 11.

Note: You may find the last strip laid will leave a larger gap than is needed between formers 1 to 3, to counter this if you let the strip take its course and remove a fillet of wood from the plank it overlaps and then fix the strip in place. See photos to clarify the above. The above note is optional only and at the discretion of the builder.

Repeat the above steps on the other side of the hull.

Stage 33 contents:- Wooden strips and nails.

Cut a strip to fit between frames5 to 7 and fix in place, above this strip start another row from frame 4 to 6 then continue it with a strip from frame 6 to 9. Start the next row from frame 3 to frame 7 then 7 to frame 10. You will notice gaps are starting to appear between the planks these will be filled at a later stage.

Start a new row of strips from frame 2 to 5 , 5 to 8 then 8 to 11. The next row of strips will start at frame 1 to 4, 4 to 7, 7 to 11 . Remove any overhanging strips from frames 1 and 11 as before when the glue is dry.

Stage 34

Stage 34 contents:- Wooden strips and ladder parts.

Cut two 3 x 3 sections from the grating piece then cut a piece of walnut strip and place the two gratings on either side of the strip but aligned along the centre. Cut more walnut strip to surround the assembly and shape as you did the other gratings you have made.

Put a ramin surround around the assembly shape, stain and clear coat as before. Test fit the grating you have just made for fit over the hole next to the grating with the wide ladder and adjust the edges so a ladder will fit through the deck if needed.

Make up another ladder like you did before but this time the steps are only 6mm wide then stain the ladder and allow to dry. Insert the ladder into one of the holes in the grating and glue in place.

Stage 35 contents:- grating strips, ramin strip, walnut strip, ladder parts.

Make another ladder with 6mm steps as you did in stage 34, stain and when dry place it in the remaining hole in the last grating you fitted.

Take the grating strips and assemble another grating block and glue them together. When the grating is dry cut two 3 x 3 sections and assemble another grating like the one assembled in stage 24.

Test fit and adjust the hatch opening next the last grating fitted then glue it in position.

Stage 36

Stage 36 contents:- Wooden strips and nails.

Take a strip then shape it to fit against the false keel going forward from frame 5. Pin and glue it in place making sure that it is snugly fitted against the false keel at the bow. When the glue is dry trim the excess strip from the bow.

Next take another strip and place it between frames 5 to 7.

The last strip to be fitted in the row should follow the curve of the reinforcements [ high lighted in pencil in the photo's] between frames 9 to 11 so as more strips are added it will follow the curve until the planks reach frame 11. Shape and fit this strip from frame 7 to the edge of the reinforcements then trim it to follow the curve when the glue has dried.

Fit the next plank below the one just laid from frame 6 forward making sure it butts up against the 1st strip for its whole length. Add another strip from frame 6 to 7 then 7 to the reinforcements edge.

The third row of strips will start to lay naturally along the curve of the hull so you will start to get open triangular fillets at the bow and stern these will be filled later in the build. Add the next row of strips from frame 5 forward then frames 5 to 8 and 8 to the stern allowing the strip to take it natural line along the hull without forcing it upwards or downwards.

Complete two more rows of strips making five rows in all then repeat for the other side of the hull.

Stage 37

Stage 37 contents:- wooden strips and nails.

Lay a strip from frame 1 to 4, 4 to 7 then 7 to 11. Start another row going from frame 1 to 5, 5 to 8 then 8 to 11 . Next add two more rows starting at frame 4 to 6 then 6 to 8 followed by 2 to 5, 5 to 7. The next row will go from frame 1 to 4. 4 to 6. At this stage you may need to cut and shape a half width plank to finish the row of strips just leaving the triangular fillets to be filled but before we start to fill the fillets repeat the above steps on the other side of the hull.

If like myself you have saved your off cut strips you can now use these to start filling the triangular gaps in the hull. To fill the fist gap of your choice take a strip of suitable length lay it against a gap and cut and shape it to size then glue it in position.

Stage 38 contents:- Bow frames.

Continue shaping and cutting strips until all the triangular gaps have been filled in the hull on both sides. Cut more wedges to fill the gaps at the bow and stern then trim them once the glue is dry.

This should now leave you with a hull that is completely covered in the first layer of planking.

Next use a small saw to remove the two build stand projections from the false keel and sand the false keel smooth along the cut marks.
