Cut a length of 2 x 4mm walnut strip to fit along the top of the port forecastle columns, ending 12mm aft of the last column.  Stain the strip the same colour as the other pieces and glue into place, centred along the columns and bulwark. Repeat on the starboard side of the forecastle.

Cut another piece of 2 x 4mm walnut strip to fit on top of the columns at the front of the forecastle, between the two bulwarks as indicated in Step 104C.  Stain and glue the same as the other pieces.

Cut a length of 2 x 7mm walnut strip long enough to cover the piece applied on the previous step.  Sand the outer corners, as shown in Step 104D so they are slightly rounded.  Stain and glue into place.

Retrieve two handrail fittings from Stages 89, 90 or 91.  Glue one underneath the ends of the rails fitted in Steps 104A and 104B.

Cut a 5mm length of 2 x 5mm walnut strip.  Sand the length into a semicircle, stain the piece and glue it into place as shown in Step 104F.  Repeat this process on the port side.

Drill four evenly spaced holes in the rails on either side of the stairs on the poop deck.  Glue an 8mm column (from Stages 96 and 100) into each of the holes.  Cut two lengths of 2 x 4mm walnut strip to fit along the top of the columns, (approximately 40mm long).  Stain the strips the same as the other rails and glue into place as shown in Step 104J.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 105 Contains: Gun Port Doors, Columns 8mm, Balcony Pillars, Columns 10mm, Gun Port Frames, Rings 2mm, Dummy Guns.

Retrieve the frets from Stages 82 and 100. Remove the two pieces remaining in the fret from Stage 82 as well as one part ‘A’ (as shown in Step 105A) from the Stage 100 fret. Smooth the pieces with sandpaper. Glue the two pieces on the ends of part ‘A’ as shown in Step 105B.

Fit the assembly onto the upper quarter gallery aligned with the rear (dotted line), as shown in Step 105C. Part ‘B’ will fit above part ‘A’. Remove any of the strips along the side that obstructs the uprights or part B. See illustrations in Step 105D.

Remove one of each part ‘B’. ‘C’ and ‘D’ from the fret. Test fit part ‘B’, trim the bottom of part ‘B’ if necessary so that it fits between part ‘A’ and the gunwale, as shown in Step 105D. Glue into place. Test fit parts ‘C’ and ‘D’ at the front of the assembly. You may wish to soak them in warm water first. Remove any parts of the strips that obstruct them and glue into position.

Use a file or sandpaper to smooth the corner between parts ‘D’ and ‘A’. Repeat Steps 105B to 105F on the starboard side of the ship.

Use a sanding block to adjust the aft edges of the balconies so they are aligned with the transom. Retrieve the frets from Stage 102, 103 and 104, remove the parts shown in Step 105I. Smooth the three parts with sandpaper and paint one side of each part with ultramarine blue, as shown in Step 105I.

Glue the three parts to the rear of the gallery balconies as shown in Step 105J, ensure the painted sides are facing inwards.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 106 Contains: Fore Chainwales, Blocks 4mm, Decorations, Crown Decorations, Wooden Strip 2 x 2 x 300mm, Dummy Guns, Crown and Shield Decorations.

Remove the remaining parts from the fret that came with Stage 103. Smooth the parts with sandpaper. Paint one side of parts ‘A’ and ‘B’ with blue paint as shown in Step 106B. Leave part ‘C’ unpainted.

Take one of the ‘A’ pieces and glue it onto the side of the middle gallery balcony with the coloured side facing inwards. Use a flat file to shape the front of the balcony so that part ‘B’ will fit properly, as shown in Step 106E. Glue part ‘B’ into place with the painted side facing inwards. Repeat Steps 106C to 106E on the port side of the ship.

Remove the five parts from the fret received with Stage 102 as well as the two pieces ‘F’ from the fret received in Stage 95. Paint one side of parts ‘D’ and ‘E’ blue as shown in Step 106F. Glue one of the ‘D’ parts to the side of the lower gallery balcony. Use a file to curve the front edge of the balcony slightly, as shown with the dotted line in Step 106G.

Test fit one of the ‘F’ parts into the position shown in Step 106H. Look at the illustration in Step 106I to ensure it is in the correct position then glue into place. Test fit part ‘E’ in place with the painted side facing inwards. Make any adjustments to the fit as necessary and glue into place.

Remove the two smaller parts from the Stage 104 fret. Sand them smooth and paint one side blue. Glue them into place at either end of the upper gallery balcony.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 107 Contains: Main Chainwales, Decorations, Blocks 4mm, Crown Decorations, Wooden Strip 2 x 2 x 300mm, Gun Port Frames, Crown and Shield Decorations.

Smooth the joins between all the parts that make up the gallery balconies so that they are flush. Sand the rear of the gallery balconies smooth as well.

Recover the rectangular pieces from the frets provided with Stages 102, 103 and 104. Glue one in the centre of each of the balconies as shown in Step 107C. Before proceeding, study Steps 107E to 107J. Apply modelling putty to the joins between all of the gallery parts, you can use it liberally as you will be removing excess.

When the putty is dry, use a piece of sandpaper to smooth it flush with the wood around it. When all the surfaces are smooth remove the powder caused by sanding the putty with a dry brush. Apply a coat of clear sealant over the quarter galleries and balconies. When the sealant is dry, smooth the surfaces of the galleries and balconies with sandpaper, then remove any residue with a dry brush.

Paint the galleries, balconies and transom with ultramarine blue paint. Look at the illustration in Step 107I to see where to paint. Let the first coat of paint dry and then repeat the process until you have achieved the desired effect.

Paint along the sides of the top row of gun ports. Don’t paint the gun ports or the strakes. Look at the illustration in Step 107K to see what should be painted.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 108 Contains: Blocks 4mm, Knees, Straps, Square Window Frames, Brass Wire 0.5mm, Deadeyes 4mm.

Retrieve the bell arch and bell from Stage 69. Cut two 20mm lengths of leftover 5 x 5mm walnut strip and trim down to 4 x 4mm. Glue the two lengths to the arch as shown in Step 108A.
Cut two lengths of spare 2 x 5mm walnut strip again trim to 4mm, one 17mm and the other 7mm. Glue the 7mm length to the centre of the 17mm length and shape the ends with a round file, as shown in Step 108B. Drill a hole all the way through the centre with a 0,75mm bit. Insert a nail into the hole in the bell so that it protrudes by 2mm from the top. Apply glue to secure it in place then insert the 2mm section into the hole in the beam constructed from the previous step.

Slide the beam between the uprights until it touches the bottom of the arch and glue into position. Glue the bell arch onto the rail along the aft edge of the forecastle deck. Drill 10 evenly spaced holes in the rail, five either side of the arch as shown in Step 108E.

Retrieve 10 x 10mm columns and glue them into the holes in the rail. Glue two lengths of 2 x 5mm trimmed to 4mm walnut strip along the tops of the columns, as shown in Step 108G, up against the side of the bell arch. Make sure there is a gap for the ladders as seen in Step 108I. Paint the railing parts with wood stain to match the other rails.

Recover leftover ladder sides and 1 x 4mm wooden strip. Create two ladders with two rungs each as shown in Step 108H. Finish them in the same way as previous ladders. Glue one of the ladders on the starboard walkway, up against the forecastle deck. Glue the other ladder on the other side as shown in Step 108J.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 109 Contains: Mizzen Chainwales, Deadeyes 4mm, Deadeyes 5mm, Wooden Strip 2 x 2 x 300mm, Chain, Nails.

Make eight posts in the same way as described in Stages 55, 69 and 88 but without the recesses for the rails. Paint the heads with the same red you have used previously, then leave them aside to dry.
Fit four of the posts to the forecastle deck in the positions shown in Step 109B. Drill pilot holes for the pins then glue into place. Repeat on the starboard side of the deck.

Paint the heads of the other posts with the same red, as shown in Step 109D. If you haven’t already done so, then paint all of the gun ports with a matt black paint. This will give them a sense of depth when the frames and guns are fitted. Paint the stern and bow ports in the same way.

When the black has dried paint the inside edges of the ports of the two lower rows with red paint.

Retrieve the circular gun ports provided in Stages 87-91. Smooth them with sandpaper and fill any gaps or rough areas with filler. Once dry paint them gold. Glue the circular gun ports into their positions in the rails on either side of the forecastle deck, as shown in Step 109I. Enlarge the holes if necessary. Glue the remaining circular gun ports into the rest of the holes along the sides of the ship.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 110 Contains: Deadeyes 4mm, Deadeyes 5mm, Gun Port Lids, Straps, Dummy Guns.

Remove the parts from the fret and glue pairs of them together, Paint the outside of the lids with the wood stain of your choice and then clear varnish. Paint the insides of the lids with red ochre paint.

Recover all of the decoration parts. Paint them all with a dark brown wash or ink, or bitumen of Judea. Before the wash has dried completely, rub a cloth along the surface to remove the majority of it leaving only a small amount in the recesses, as shown in Step 110C. This technique gives a sense of depth to the parts. Step 110D shows the difference between decorations with the wash applied and those without.

Glue two of the windows onto the two uppers ports at the bow, as shown is Step 110E. Glue four columns between the windows of the upper gallery as shown in Step 110F.

Glue eight more columns between the windows of the middle and lower gallery, as indicated by the red arrows in Step 110G. Then glue a column at either end of the windows, as indicated by the white arrows. These outer columns should match the angle of the transom.

Cut two lengths of 2 x 5mm wooden strip to roughly the height shown in Step 110H, glue above the upper windows at the edge of the transom. Paint them ultramarine blue. Retrieve the long columns and glue them to the upper windows and strips from the previous step. Step 110J shows how the columns should look when fitted properly.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 111 Contains: Balcony Decorations, Figurehead, Mast Collars 14mm, Mast Collar 12mm.

Drill a 2mm hole in the centre of each of the gun ports. Recover all of the gun port frames, apply the detailing wash if you haven’t already and glue them over the top row of the gun ports. Step 111C shows how the starboard side should look with the frames in place. Repeat on the port side of the ship.

Recover four windows, apply the detailing wash if you haven’t already and glue them into the positions shown in Step 111D. Repeat on the other side.

Retrieve the mizzen chainwale fret from Stage 109. Remove the two pieces and sand them. Use a file to create six notches along one side, 14mm apart. At this stage it is advisable to paint the chainwales with the wood stain of your choice and leave to dry.

Glue some left over 2 x 2mm wooden strip to the side of the chainwale containing the notches. When dry, carefully sand the ends of the strip to match the curve of the wale. Drill a 1mm hole through each of the notches made in Step 111E.

Glue the chainwale to the starboard side in the position shown in Step 111H, on top of the strake. Remove four knees from the fret received with Stage 108 and sand them smooth. Stain them with the wood stain of your choice. When dry, glue the longer side to the chainwale and the shorter side to the bulwark as shown in Step 111I. Repeat Steps 111E to 111I to fit the port mizzen chainwale.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 112 Contains: Balcony Decorations, Balcony Columns, Dummy Guns.

Retrieve the two square window frames from Stage 108, apply the wash if you haven’t already. Hold up against the starboard side of the ship in the position shown in Step 112A, mark the edges of the frame onto the side. Cut away the section of the strake where the window frame will fit, then glue it into place.

Use the same light blue used to simulate the gallery windows to paint the insides of the windows along the side, as indicated by the red arrows in Step 112C.

Retrieve the fore chainwales from Stage 106 and prepare them in the same way as the mizzen chainwales in Stage 111. Glue the fore chainwales either side of the forecastle in the position shown in Step 112E, on top of the strake. Retrieve one of the two larger mast collars from Stage 111 and glue it over the hole in the forecastle deck.

Prepare 10 knees (from the fret in Stage 108) as done previously, glue five on top of each of the fore chainwales as shown in Step 112F.

Recover four crown decorations and two cross decorations, apply the wash if you haven’t already. Glue them into place on the bulwarks at the aft end of the forecastle, as shown in Step 112G. Glue another cross decoration on either side, aft of the mizzen chainwales.

Retrieve the two other mast collars, glue the larger over the hole in the main deck and the smaller over the hole in the quarterdeck, as indicated by the arrows in Step 112I. Treat the stern decoration with a wash as with the other decorations. Glue it onto the transom, aligned centrally just above the windows, as shown in Step 112J.

Retrieve the main chainwales from Stage 107 and some 2 x 2mm wooden strip. Prepare the chainwales in the same way as the fore and mizzen sets. Notice the last 4 holes are set 8mm apart rather than 12mm. Glue one of the main chainwales up against the rail at the front of the quarterdeck, resting on the strake as shown in Step 113B. The holes spaced 8mm apart should be closest to the stern.

Prepare and glue four knees to the main chainwales and bulwark, at the positions indicated by the red arrows in Step 113C. Repeat these steps to fit the port main chainwale and knees.

Glue three crown and two cross decorations to the starboard side in the positions shown in Step 113E. If you haven’t already applied a wash you should always do so before fitting any of the decorations.

Retrieve all the crown and shield decorations as shown in Step 113F. Glue six shields between he upper row of gun ports as shown in Step 113G. Repeat on the port side. Glue another two shields to the sides of the galleries in the positions indicated by the red arrows in Step 113H. Repeat on the port side.

Retrieve the figurehead that came with Stage 111 and paint it gold, allow to dry fully before proceeding. Apply your detailing wash to the figurehead and wipe away the excess. Put to one side and leave to dry.

Stage 114 Contains: Port Window Decoration, Sun Decorations, Wreath Decoration, Block 4mm, Column Decorations, Port Decoration, Shield Decorations.

Retrieve some 1mm brass wire. Straighten the wire as shown in Step 114A and cut two 180mm lengths. Rub the wire with an abrasive pad to increase its shine. Place two lengths next to each other and secure them together with superglue.

Cut two 54mm sections of the doubled brass wire. Bend the end 2mm of both sections to a right angle. Stage 115 Contains: Starboard Window Decoration, Sun Decorations, Wreath Decorations, Blocks 4mm, Column Decorations, Starboard Decoration, Shield Decorations.

Cut four 40mm lengths of 1mm thick brass wire and prepare in the same way as in Stage 114. Glue the lengths together to create two pieces then glue them above the upper gallery windows, either side of the decoration as shown in Step 115A.

Prepare another section of doubled wire 140mm in length. Fold around the corner of the middle balcony and glue into place. Cut the front of the wire in line with the side of the balcony as indicated by the dotted line in Step 115B. Create a 50mm length of doubled wire and glue along the curved front of the middle balcony. Cut the excess in line with the side as indicated by the dotted line in Step 115C.

Prepare two doubled sections of 1mm brass wire, one 150mm long and the other 50mm long. Shape and glue the 150mm piece to the rear and side of the lower balcony and the 50mm piece at the front, as shown in the inset photo in Step 115D. Remember to trim the excess, as shown by the dotted line, from each piece before proceeding. Repeat Steps 115A to 115D on the port side.

Recover the balcony pillars from Stage 105. Apply a wash to them as done previously and then glue five to the projecting central section of the upper balcony as shown in Step 115E.

Retrieve the pillars and angled column decorations from Stages 103 and 104. Apply a wash and leave to dry. Glue them into the positions shown in Step 115F, around the upper balcony. Repeat on the port side.

Fit six of the angled columns to the middle balcony as shown in step 115G. Prepare and glue five more columns to the starboard sides of the middle and lower balconies, as indicated by the red arrows in Step 115H. Prepare and glue one of the decorations that came with Stage 112 between the two angled columns at the front of the middle gallery.

Look at the image in Step 115I and collect the relevant decorations as indicated by the red arrows. Prepare them as before and glue into position. Prepare and glue the three decorations as shown in Step 115J to the lower balcony. Repeat Steps 115H to 115J on the port side of the balconies.

This stage is now complete. Keep any materials you haven’t used as they will be needed in future stages.
