The answer is no there isn’t any harm in it at all, the only thing you would have to make sure of is that the tacks don’t penetrate too deeply as the plank could work its way free over the tack head or split the wood. I’m assuming it’s because you don’t want to see the tack heads?

There is a method that was used on the Victory build, in that you put the tack virtually all the way in and then snip off the head of the tack with a pair of wire cutters. As with all builds its best to do a few and then see how they look before moving on to do more. Make sure the tack is how you want it though before you snip the head off though, otherwise it will be difficult to remove.

With all the wooden ship builds I've done I've always resorted to removing the pins when the glue has fully cured and have not encountered any problems to date. It is really down to personal choice but leaving the pins in can cause problems during the sanding phase especially where the pins are not embedded deep enough....
