Lotus 97T Tobacco Decals

The tobacco decals supplied with the build have a thick overcoat film which is very noticeable when applied and detracts from the finish. I have found a simple way of removing this film, leaving just the printing, and the end result is much nicer to look at and is almost as good as the factory printed lettering. Here are the steps:

1. Soak the decal, slide it off into final position, blot it to remove the water.

2. Apply Solvaset or Micro Sol liberally to the decal, this is important to ensure the decal is well stuck to the part, especially if the decal is on a 'carbon fiber' part. Let it work for 5 minutes and then gently dab down the decal surface with a soft paintbrush to expel air bubbles. Leave to harden overnight.

3. The next day (not much longer as the overcoat film will age harden), dip a soft paintbrush in Humbrol enamel thinners or good quality white spirit (like Rustins) and wet the entire decal. Keep wetting the decal for about 5 minutes. This will soften the overcoat film. Try gently rubbing an edge of the overcoat film with the soft part of your finger (not your fingernail) and see if the overcoat film rubs off. If not, apply more white spirits and wait a little longer. The overcoat film should rub off easily and completely leaving the coloured print. Gently wipe over the coloured print with a soft piece of tissue dipped in enamel thinners to remove any remaining residue.

Caveats: This technique works especially well on kit surfaces that are painted gloss, and 'carbon fiber' surfaces that have a glossy sheen. Some 'carbon fiber' surfaces have a semi-gloss sheen and with the latter you need to be more careful as the enamel spirits can remove the paint layer if rubbed too enthusiastically. But if you stick to the above instructions you should have no problems. As always, try it out first. And the good news is that the remaining coloured print seems durable, but as always try not to handle it. Brave modellers can always overcoat their parts with clear lacquer. BTW I have tried other solvents on the overcoat film and white spirits is the only one that worked.
