hi Mike.
you mentioned mahogany planking, is it same thickness as normal planking.
wondering how it will bend being hard wood, and if it will pin without being drilled first. and if you will be painting it or danish oil to bring out its natural colour. Ian Cool

Hi Ian sorry I missed your postBlink

The mag planking is 5mm x 2mm and yes it is not easy to bend consistantly.
I soaked the planks in hot water for at least 20 mins then fitted the planks to the hull wet with out adhesive using pins is not a problem, you need to drill the planks when you have tapered the planks so the pins do not split the wood.when the planks are dry I remove them, bevel the edges and taper where required, then fit again using adhesive.

I will use Danish oil when the Hull is sandedBigGrin

Thanks for your questionBigGrin

Regards MikeBigGrin Cool

Mike there is something you can add to water to help soften the wood fibres to help them bend, i will look it up and let you know

Aparantly if you add Ammonia to the water it helps soften the planks more, it is supposed to be good for hardwoods such as Walnut.

Now I suppose this might bring in some comments, as we all have a reliable source of ammonia, so I'm not suggesting we all pee on our wood BigGrinBigGrin

This info comes from Planking techniques for model builders, Underhill lent me a copy a few months ago one of his old relations gets qite a few mentions in it as he was a plan designer and model builder.
Come on you Jimmies

BALSA FILLETS ON THE HULL

The last two photos show how easy it has been to get the shape of the Stern using this balsa method.

I am really pleased with the outcome, I have a great base to start my plankingBigGrin Questions and comments welcome.
