First mod!

Variable pitch and constant speed propellers have a prominent assembly on the front of the propeller hub that houses the counterweights and pitch change piston, this is normally hidden under a spinner:




After checking ahead at Mr T's build, its looks like the Zero propeller hub won't be fitted with one, which is fair enough given its all hidden by the spinner anyway and the omission won't bother 99.999999999999999999999999999999% of people who build the Zero
But it will bug me, so after digging up this photo:


I set to, and cut up and shaped some styrene tube and card, the 'stem' of the pitch change piston housing has been made overlong for now and will be trimmed to length once some hex bolts from Scale Hardware have arrived and the propeller is mounted permanently:


Styrene rod was fitted to the back of the counterweights, and the front faces drilled with 3 shallow holes, yes it should be 5, but I'm not that pernickety! The front holes then had little bits of rod inserted:


The styrene rod snippetts on the front were then filed to just about nothing to represent screws, I pressed a knife blade into the styrene to make slots:


Counterweights attached to the piston housing:




After painting with Vallejo MA aluminium and a black wash:


I feel much better now.

Now how to make the spinner removable...................

Pack number 2 has arrived :-)

Which means more mods!

First up for experimenting is the rib bracing.

I grabbed my trusty Dremel and a diamond cutting wheel:

The cutting wheels can be obtained from evilbay.
I marked out the fine tubing with length and two marks for the end slots:


I then cut the tubing lengths, using a medium speed setting on the Dremel.


The ends of the tubing was then carefully notched:


Once the tubing was in place on the rib, I crimped the ends with pliers:


Nano dabs of CA was applied to secure the bracing:


I did the same for the U shaped trusses as well, but being thinner metal, I dialled the speed down on the Dremel:




Now for the detachable spinner:

2 x 3mm neo magnets were CA'd to the spinner parts:




Even with a few mm of alloy in the way, two pairs of magnets still grip tight:







I'll put in a third pair for symmetry once some new stocks have arrived from evilbay.

It Growed!

With all ribs painted and Rib no 12 'trussed up', I've assembled up the start of a wing:







I've used the supplied screws for now , I'll use bolts once everything is in its final place as they won't as easy to undo and replace as the screws.

Now to wait for the next instalment......
