Hi All This is where i will be doing a build diary of the operable Sakae engine regards Andy  Please note Tom has asked me to add this note on the building of the Sakae engine; Some of the instructions for the assembly of the operable Zero engine refer to the instructions of the Zero, such as Stages 13 and 50, which are identical in assembly. Therefore you should retain these Instruction Stages if you have purchased the operable engine, as you will need to refer to them. You will also need to refer to future stages, such as Stage 97 and 99. Hi Andy! You are a very happy person to get this set. It was very popular parts set in Japan. Some builders had to give up this set because of some reasons. Especially the sound is recorded from real Sakae, I hope to hear it someday. When DeAGO Japan sold this set, they planned a tour of LA to see restored Zero fighter and its Sakae engine. As I look at your painting of this engine I begin to wonder if I should look at a new airbrush, compressor and Alclad paints to do this engine. They seem to have lots of different metallic finishes available.
It is a step in a direction that is new to me and I have no experience with the things at all.
I will be going to Telford in November and will more than likely visit the Alclad stand and be asking lots of questions.
Can you tell me what you've used on your engine so far?

Hi Andy This looks good, does this completely replace all other engine parts supplied? I have been watching several zero builds and the kit original partwork engine did look very detailed - im guesing the operable engine is at the cost of the higher detail of the original or can you use both in the finished display? Steve

Hi Snap I have used Tamiya throughout apart from the life colour Aotake with a matt silver base coat and I used railmatch weathered black on the cylinders to get that oily look. Hi Steve Yes it is a compleat replacement for the kit engine, although there is still a lot more detail to add to this motor and it fits directly into the build by the lugs on the back. What a lot of builders did in Japan was to mount the original engine in a stand so it looks as though an engine change is about to take place, others just display it next to the finished model. Its the best of both worlds really with a fully cowled working engine with sound and a scale engine to display aswell regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi Andy.the engine on display sounds a great idea, I only asked because the operable engine didnt look as detailed as the kit one but i never realised that there were more parts to go on Looks great anyway Steve

Hi Steve The engine needs to be painted before the wires to the spark plugs are added and the cooling fins are also to add to the sides, Also when the engine is fully cowled up the only parts visible are the front centre of the engine and the cylinders so it will still look right in situ Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi All Engine build continued Preparation 1/ Using a 1 mm drill drill out to a depth of 1.5 mm the holes at the front of the cylinders where the spark plugs are to be fitted. 2/ Then on the rear firewall use a .75 mm drill to drill holes above the rear set of cylinders, this is where the leads for the rear cylinder spark plugs will be accomodated as this part is ommited from the engine. 3/ Finally at the back of the front set of cylinders use a .75 drill to make holes for the rear set of leads as there are no spark plugs here to fit them too. 4/ Again take the .75 drill and drill holes in the central distribution ring where the protusions are equally spaced around it. Use a pin to centre the drill as clearance and width of material to drill holes here is at a minimum. 5/ Make up the spark plug leads as instructed in the metal engine build the difference here being they are glued together at the base, unlike the metal engine build where there kept apart. Hi All Engine build continued Placement of the spark plug wiring 1/ Add all the spark plugs to the cylinders making sure the open ends all face in a clockwise direction as stated in the metal engine build. 2/ Attatch the made up spark plug wires to the central ring on the engine, there will be 7 short and 7 long sets make sure they are placed in an alternating short and long sequence starting with a short set at one end of the ring but going around the ring in a clockwise manner. 3/ Again working clockwise start attaching the wires to there positions on the spark plugs , at rear of the forward cylinders and through the firewall for the rear cylinders. One thing to note is all the shorter wires will always go to a spark plug the longer wires on each made up set will either be attached to the rear of the front set of cylinders or the rear firewall. Do you think it may be possible to replace the distribution ring with one from the metal engine?

Hi Snap Thanks for looking in and your comments, this engine build is an out of the box job so additions are not allowed. As for your Question on the distribution ring it would be feasible to replace it and quite a few of the plastic parts with there metal equivalents but it would involve some serious heart surgery to do it and I would only recommend it to be done by someone with a great deal of experience in this sort of rebuild . Of course any one who decides to follow the rebuild path would do it at there own risk. One the other thing to point out is on the finished model with this unit fitted all the engine cowls and fuselage panels back to the firewall are fitted so the only viewable part of the engine would be in the gap between the spinner and cowl.
