I have given the rock face a second coat of PVA glue. I have also added some more rocks in places whilst I was gluing, I also cemented the brass tubes into the foam so there would be no movement when the model is in situ.
The next stage was to draw around the rock, marking it out onto the base for accuracy. You will also notice that I have added the third brass tube in place. I have also cut out two holes, one on either end of the front panel, these will be where the speaker grill will be placed. The two holes on the base are where the wire will be threaded into the display case.
The next step was to add any wiring into the upper display box that needs to be in place before any work is carried out on the diorama. Most of the electronics will be attached to the bottom base for ease of access and final piecing together.
I was going to make the speaker grill, but whilst looking on the web for some fine mesh, I came across a mesh container ultrasonic cleaning steel watch parts for watchmakers or jewellers. These come with a removable lid which is what I have used. I’m sure the bottom part will come in handy one day.
The last couple of pictures show the speakers and switches in place and the inside with the wiring ready for connection.

The next stage was to mask off the display case except the top where the diorama will be placed. I glued the rock formation onto the base using PVA glue to both parts. I then screwed the rock from inside the case to make sure there was no movement.
I then used some Durhams water putty. This is in a powder form and mixing with water produce’s a paste mixture. This was then applied to the base around the rock with a spatula and then cleaned up around the edges. You will notice I have not smoothed the surface but left it wavy when spreading it over the surface. This will be part of the overall effect.
I then added some small stones from the garden and placed then around the putty and rock formation for added effect.
This will be allowed to dry for a few days before a primer paint is applied to the whole thing.

The main rock piece has now been primed ready for the base colour. This will be done with ComArt burnt umber. I will give this at least two coats of paint and leave to dry over several days. Some crackle effects will be added to some areas, before I will add the sand and some more little stones across the whole display.
As you can see in one of the pictures below, I will be using some pigment powders. These will hopefully give me the reddish stone and sand colour I am looking for as shown in the sample picture below.
After putting off the electronics for some time now, I decided to make a start. The first picture shows the underside of the upper display where I have started to wire the switches ready for the main board. The last picture shows the main electronics which is the inside of the bottom base. I have connected the lighting and motor boards, and these have been tested with success. As you can see, I have used a couple of Buck converters to reduce the voltage from the mains supply to some of the components.
The brown PCB in the centre has just been placed there for now. This will be fixed in place once the sound and amplifier chips have been soldered to it and then programmed with the sound effects.

I have done a little more with the circuitry this evening. The sound board and amplifier have now had the pins soldered, and these will go into a small breadboard which will be fixed onto the base.
The sound board has been programmed with the engine sound effects, this took some time as the switches I have needed to be programmed with the sound file to enable it to work. This took several exempts to sort out.
Once all that was done, I have used a larger temporary breadboard and wired to the rest of the circuitry to make sure everything works as it should.
The video is a test video to show how it sounds and works.
I have also ordered some more larger, hopefully, louder speakers as I think these were a little bit on the quiet side, despite having turned the amplifier to its maximum setting.
