Issue 108 now complete with the construction of 24 gun port lids, 8 painted with a black facing and the other 16 left as natural sapele... Quite straight forward in constructing these but would give one word of caution.. the sapele overhangs 3 sides of the lids and these overhangs are very brittle, I broke the overhang off on two lids so had to re-do.... No hinges provided as yet, I think these are supplied with the next issue.... .. Happy building all Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Thank you for you kind comments Dave and am sure your build will look great, just take your time and study the work to be done carefully.... I'll answer all your questions to your posts in this one reply.. Firstly the cannons, all the cannons will have eyelets fitted even the first cannon you make up... The eyelets in issue 1 will be used late. In fact I should point out here that not all items supplied in each issue will be used during the work to be done on that issue. Any parts you do not use will be used later so what you have left you should place in a plastic bag, marked with the issue number and carefully stored until required. On the gun ports, not quite sure whether you are referring to the cutting out of the gunports or the making of the gunport lids... Gunports were cut out using a dremel with a carving bit. If you look at page 1 of my diary you will see an index which will take you to the part of the build on cutting out the gunports... Tools used for the lids were simply a modellers knife and a very fine sanding block.... Hope this answers your questions and thanks again for looking in and commenting... Regards Alan

Tonight I finally finished one of the anchors. My first attempt at an anchor many moons ago was not my best but used it as a learning exercise... Thought also the stock was a little too short so on this one I increased its overall length by 5mm.. Stock has been given 3 coats of medium oak stain followed by a coat of satin varnish... I also decided to discard the supplied ring and fitted a larger one. Added puddening to the ring using the brown rigging thread supplied. Finally drilled .5mm holes and inserted some cut planking pins..... Moved onto making up the figurehead. First problem was to deal with was to move the front hole to accommodate the pin on the horses hoof, the hole was about 2mm out... First filled the hole, sanded it all down and repainted... Drilled the front hole in its new postion. Glued the horse and figures in place as per the mag instructions... Small little touch ups needed to finish it off but for now thought I would sit it on the bow of the ship to see how it would look.... It is not glued in position as yet.... ... Happy building all.. Gandale wrote:Well tonight the POTS finally got the scalping it deserved so can now once again be classed as the SOTS.... .. Obviously still more treenailing on the upper hull to be done but can't do that until after I have dry fitted the gallery and planked the area around it.. .. Tomorrow will get down to the business of gently sanding it down to hopefully give it the subtle look I am after.... .. Once that's done will move onto tidying up the stern area in preparation of starting the second planking layer of the lower hull..all to be done in walnut..... ... Regards Alan Hi Alan This is your first build of the SOTS?.... what can i say.. look at all that dedication!!! Promise too much ...and many will be in search of you!
