in my case the colour changes from full thickness down to about a quarter thickness and then gets thicker again, so I cut a piece to the thinnest point, next I marked this piece at the point it changed colour (arrowed pic 3) File Attachment(s): willz attached the following image(s):

next I glued a walnut strip from the pencil mark at one end and to the corner at the other, then left to set, after glue set I`m left with my piece with the excess walnut overhanging, with my saw still set for the width of the second planking strip I simply put it thought again to remove excess walnut, my next step was to glue a strip of boxwood up to the walnut and leave to dry,, (phew) again when dry through the saw it goes to remove the excess boxwood, this leaves us with a double thickness planking strip that changes colour, the colour change on the strip is straight because they are both machine edges together,, but when you glue it up to the first thin planking strip it will curve, one last point, I usually use titebond glue but for this I used pva, simply because its not as brittle setting and we dont want the bits popping off when curving into place willz attached the following image(s):

cheers lads appreciated, as i continued making up the bottom wale it was impossible to keep the walnut stock all the same colour, as you can see by the pic the individual pieces dont match, this is the problem you get when you buy your timber at different times, so a lesson learnt, on the bright side it will inform the viewer of the intricate construction of the wales. hope everyone is having a great time at this time of year, cheers lads i`m off for a beer willz attached the following image(s):

Hi all, hope everyone had a great time over the festive season…. On with my build, finished the bottom wale on the port side and was completing the gunport linings, when I noticed a bad colour match on one of the stock shape wale pieces !! kept bugging me so in the end decided to replace it, it was one with the colour change running through it so wasn`t happy, so heres how I did it. Going to do this tutorial is small stages, so first heres a pic of the piece that needs replacing, going to replace the whole stock shape, the wrong colour bit is far too small, so easier to remove in one and make another split colour piece willz attached the following image(s):

very true Martyn ok so we dont want to damage anything surrounding our piece so here we go. First of all I always use pva or titebond interior, this allows me to use this method. I cut some kitchen towel the same length and about 4 or 5 time wider, then fold to the breadth of the piece, soak it in clean warm water turn the ship on its side and place the wet kitchen towel over the work. so after ten mins remove kitchen towel and dig out some bits from the centre of the piece, never go closer than 3 or 4 mm to the edge, trying to dig out from the edges will damage the surrounding work .. after you`ve lashed some bits out of the middle this will reveal some dry areas so again on with the kitchen towel for another 5 mins. Keep repeating this till its removed, when your about 3 mm from the edge you can lift out the piece from its neighour, making sure its loose enough, heres a pic of mine when removed, you can see the marks in the centre that was made with my stanley blade looking at whats left you can just faintly see the pencil mark the i used for the colour change willz attached the following image(s):
