Hi All the rough sanding of the hull is more or less compleat just some finishing off around the stern[only just glued it on ]and bow, still needs a good final sanding but cant do that till i get the measurments to go on the base [next issue i think].As ussual all comments are welcome regards Andy arpurchase attached the following image(s): Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Looks great, but can you tell me what type of epoxy you used on the inside of the hull? I have never tried a ship like this and as such will need advice from people like yourself and Mr T. I smile because i have NO IDEA whats going on :)

Hi Smuggler The epoxy i use is by Pacer[there are other brands on the market]and comes in two 6oz bottles,i find it mixes easily and has a good coverage, 60ml did the inside of the Yamato, you will also need some mixing cups and wooden spatulas but any old wood will do as long as its clean and last of all the cheapest brushes u can buy as they are of no use once the epoxys gone off, quarter to half inch wide is ok . Also it sands easily and can be painted over,im still contemplating using this as a base coat on the outer hull before painting as it will give a smooth glass like finish that when painted will more resemble a steel hull. Hope this helps regards Andy arpurchase attached the following image(s): Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Thanks for the info, and the suggestion of using it on the outside is a stroke of genius , i was pulling my hair out ( Whats left of it ), trying to work out how to smooth the ouer hull properly so i can paint it. I smile because i have NO IDEA whats going on :)

No probs Smuggler just remenber although the resin will have a semi self leveling effect so small blemishes will be filled by it ,but major craters [not saying you have any ]will have to be filled. As with all jobs a good basic finish to the hull will give a smooth finish when the epoxy goes on regards Andy PS it will probablly take at least 2/3 coats of epoxy and a good sanding back to get the desired finish and a light sanding after as a key for the paint Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi All decided to epoxy coat the inner hull as it will be more difficult to get to all the nooks and crannys soon as more things are added to the hull. As usual all comments are welcome regards Andy arpurchase attached the following image(s): Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Thanks Smuggler and n/p on the resin it wouldnt be a forum if we didnt help each other out on diffrent ways of doing stuff. Il deffinatly be using resin on the outer hull to get the effect i want but contemplating on wether to use nylon aswell [ its very light nylon only 1oz per square meter],it wont really add strength but when applied corectly it will give a uniform effect to the hull , if people are intrested in this tecnique then il do the lay up as a tutorial regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

As long as you fill and sand the hull well, you shouldnt really need to coat the hull. if you want a smoother finish to it just brush on some watered down PVA and let it dry. Once primed you wouldn't notice a difference. All you really want to be doing is making sure you cant see the planking through the paint. Has anyone thought of, or have any examples of weathering schemes for the akagi and yamato? Im not Sure whether to leave them as prime display models, or add some rust and evidence of battle damage from before their losses. Current Builds: DeAgostini Akagi DeAgostini Yamato

Thanks Dragonbones for the nice comment, just to reply to your PVA method, yes that is an option but PVA like the acrylic paint you get now are all water based so the outer hull will not be compleatly sealed and still be affected by humidity factors which over time will crack the finish [especialy if as like most of us your running central heating].Hence my preferance to go for the epoxy finish on the outside and inside, also Tamiya do a weathering kit for IJN ships, look on my post in the Yamato model 'handrails and other goodies'.I think il just be going for the general weathering effect not any battle damage but thats quite an intresting idea regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi All Pack 7 arived this morning so cracked on with the build and assembled the stern frames ,just a note here some of the facings to the 3 stern frames had marks/digs on them so just ensure that when you assemble them you have a good face on the top and bottom and double check the alignment as you clamp them up.As ussual all comments are welcome more pics to follow regards Andy arpurchase attached the following image(s): Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
