USS Constitution Pack 3 – Stages 17-27

Stage 17 Contents: Fore wall and gun mounts.

In Stage 15 the stern reinforcements were provided, mark the two smaller ones 'B' and the long ones 'A' then remove them from the fret and sand the edges flat. Now glue the 'A' reinforcements to the false keel between frames 9 and 10 then the 'B' ones between frames 10 and 11. Leave to dry.

It is now time to fair the frames to the correct profile so the planks run true along the hull. There will be more shaping at the bow than the stern so try to use a long sanding block to do this. In the pictures you can see the tools I used to fair my hull any equivalent tools will do the job Do the fairing in stages and test often by running the fore walls down the frames till you get a smooth sit and also fair the bow and stern reinforcements. Once the fairing is complete you are ready for the next stage.

Stage complete.

Stage eighteen contents: Midship walls and gun mounts.

Take the Fore walls from stage 17 and prepare them for use by soaking for a short while in water to ease shaping them to the bow curve. You will notice on the fore walls two cut outs along the lower edge these fit onto the tabs along the sides of the Spar deck. When you are happy with the fit glue the walls in position and fix with the steel nails using the pin pusher to do this that was provided with stage 16.

You can also use a small hammer to make sure the pins are fully inserted into the wood, once both walls are fitted leave the parts to dry.

Stage twenty contents: Fore walls and gun mounts.

Take the fore wall and test fit it to the front of the hull by lining up the tabs and adjust if necessary you will also notice that frames 3 and 4 will come to the front and rear edges of gun ports 1 and two, mark the wall on both sides with a pencil at these points.

Take a gun mount and remove all the parts from the fret and sand smooth. Part 'A' has the centre removed and part 'B' is a rectangle. Next take the 'A ' components and glue them to the inside of the wall making sure they are correctly lined up with the gun ports and leave to dry. Once the parts are dry locate the pencil lines and trim the two front 'A' components to line up with the pencil lines and then line up and glue the 'B' parts onto the 'A' parts so a box is formed when you look from the outside.

Dry fit the wall to the hull and make sure it fits correctly you may have to adjust the gun mounts to fit against the frames at the bow end. Once the wall fits correctly glue and pin it in position. Do the same for the other fore wall but remember to make left or right handed sides then leave to dry.

Stage complete.

Stage twenty-four contents: Gratings, ramin strip, walnut strip and eyerings.

Take the grating strips and assembly them into a full square and use glue to fix them together. When the grating is dry cut a 2 x 4 section from the large grate and sand it smooth. Now cut the 2 x 3mm walnut strip into four pieces two short and two long to fit around the grating and glue them in place.

When the strips are dry sand the edges smooth and curve the upper edge then cut four more 2 x 2mm ramin strips to go around the edge of the walnut strip. Sand the ramin strips to profile after they are dry. Next stain the whole grate with your preferred wood-stain leave to dry then clear-cote the grate.

Locate the foremast hole on the Spar deck and measure 15mm forward from the front edge of the fore mast hole and glue the grate in place.

Now place another strip between frames seven and eleven and glue in place.

Fit and adjust two more rows of planks alternating the butt joints between frames five and four until four rows are in place. The fourth plank to be laid will need to be trimmed at frame eleven like you did with the frame one strips.
