will there still be support/updates available, say 3 years (or more) after the release? with the ever evolving mobile device market, i dont want to find in the future when i get a new phone, or get a OS update it renders the app, and therefore the droid pretty useless. that would be very disappointing indeed. just a thought and not a moan. Its a simple WiFi connection that is dependent on the strength of your WiFi. You also have the option to use Direct Wifi for its operation, therefore won't be inoperable providing your mobile device is WiFi compatible.

TBH in regards to the app going out of date on new operating systems if not supported in the future ... well if that happens old mobile phones are readily available for less price than may remotes out there ... if that was to be the case , I'd just get one and use it dedicated for R2 SOME MORNINGS IT JUST DOESN'T SEEM WORTH IT TO GNAW THROUGH THE LEATHER STRAPS

The Official word..
Dear customers,
Since the launch of our Build your own R2-D2 Collection we have worked extensively to ensure we deliver the best remote controllable droid experience we can.
We can advise that the user can connect their R2-D2 droid with a mobile device with and without a WIFI network background. This connection allow the user to control the movement and most of the functions of the R2-D2, and can stream video from the camera of R2-D2 to a mobile device during the WIFI connection.
Our App will allow you to control your R2-D2 droid remotely without incurring into any extra usage fees, even after the first 3 years period has expired, so that you won’t have to pay any extra usage fee, contrary to what we had initially advertised.
We hope you continue to enjoy building your own R2-D2 droid.

Issue 100 only provides a brief explanation of how the App works - A detailed User Guide can be found on the R2-D2 web page (behind "The Build" tab)

I too have immensely enjoyed this build. Being in the US, months behind all of you UK'ers, I can't say that I'd be disappointed if the app was delayed a few months... so we finish the build at the same time! Current Builds: R2D2, Millenium Falcon

Nice to read the online guide. Lots of fun and control. Its looks really well thought out. Very impressive. I thought r2 had bluetooth too? There is no mention anywhere in the guide how to use these features Building: Ghostbusters Ecto-1, Ford GT40, Gone in 60 seconds Eleanor mustang, Shelby Cobra Complete: R2D2, Red Bull RB7 RC, Battleship Bismarck, Shelby GT500 'super snake'

WiFi direct mode has replaced Bluetooth as it handles video better due to the volumes of data being transferred. R2-D2 has two methods of WiFi that you can set up....
Local WiFi mode - a user has an existing WiFi network that their devices attach to. In this case, R2 can also attach to the existing network, and any device on that network can run the app and communicate with R2.
WiFi Direct mode - is where a user wants to connect the device that can run the app, directly to R2. No other connections to R2 are allowed, and the device that runs the app won't be able to connect to a second WiFi network at the same time it's talking to R2 (of course, if it's a phone, it could still be connected to 4G or whatever phone line you have).
The first is great if you have a home network set up and just want to plug R2 into it without having to change your phone settings every time you want to run the app, and the second is best if you don't have a WiFi network where you want to run R2 (such as outdoors) or you just want a connection that doesn't interfere with anything else. In actual fact WiFi direct mode is better than Bluetooth.

Can we please keep comment here to being App related and post Bluetooth matters into the Bluetooth topic you've started, thanks.. https://forum.model-spac...amp;m=298095#post298095
