Can anyone help please.
I have built my HMS Victory with standing rigging only. Would it be correct to add the flags or would they have been taken down? Many thanks Chris

Hi Chris. I had a check through my books and there is a photo of the Vic taken after her 1960's re-rigging and as far as I can see she only has the standing rigging in place. In the 'old days' a ship like Victory would only have her standing rigging alone if she was 'in reserve' ie, laid up waiting for Johnny Frenchman to start his usual antics when she would be re-crewed and re-rigged. According to the photo the Vic has her White Ensign flying at the stern and the Union flag or Jack flying at the Jackstaff on the bowsprit. The only other flag in evidence is the St George's flag (England) flying from the main mast top, the photo is so over exposed up there however that I can only see the red cross part and not the white background so I can't tell if it is a regular rectangular flag or the long pennant type. Anyway, all you should need are those three flags, all the other ones, signal flags etc would be stored away as they all went up the running rigging. Hope that's helpful! Robin. First wooden ship: The Grimsby 12 Gun 'Frigate' by Constructo Second: Bounty DelPrado Part Works Third: HMS Victory DelPrado Part Works 1/100 scale Diorama of the Battle of the Brandywine from the American Revolutionary War Diorama of the Battle of New Falkland (unfinished sci-fi), Great War Centenary Diorama of the Messines Ridge Assault Index for the Victory diary is on page 1

Hi Robin, Thank you so much for replying. Not only that but you too the time and effort to do some research on my behalf. To be honest I wouldn't have known where to start looking. I shall follow your comments and add the flags you mention. Thanks again. Chris.

Hi, me again. Am I the only one to find that they don't get notified of a reply to a post? I've checked the options box at the top and that is set to notify. Not a big problem but it just means that you have to get into the website and check "manually" if that makes sense? Chris

Chris Hi Chris, I have never used the notification system, so I`m at a loss as to the issue at this point. I will start checking out what the problem could be and get back to you ASAP. Until then, as you say keep checking in. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Hi Chris. Yes, I used to get notifications in my email inbox whenever anyone had commented on any of my diaries but I think they stopped about a year or so ago. It was about that time that I got a re-conditioned desktop with windows 10 as my old faithful with windows xp could no longer log on to the forum (and a lot of other websites too, some are still ok but many now inform me that the xp's internal clock is not correct - even though it is! ) I just assumed that the non notifications were a consequence of upgrading to 10 but perhaps not? Robin Thanks for the replies. It's no big deal because to be honest, from a period ship building point of view in particular, this forum is so quiet these days that it's actually a bit of a (nice) surprise when a response is made. As I said, no big deal. Chris
